Hospice Palliative Care

Since 1997, we have focused substantial energy and resources from GlaxoSmithKline and The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation on hospice palliative care. GlaxoSmithKline employees selected this cause to help make a strong impact on the quality of people's lives. Our commitment to hospice palliative care strengthens our ties to the community and to one another. It matches our strengths and experience, and expresses the values and commitment of the people at GlaxoSmithKline.

About hospice palliative care

Hospice palliative care has emerged as a holistic form of community care that improves the quality of life for terminally-ill people and their families. An increasingly essential service, hospice palliative care integrates practical, emotional and medical support, either at home or in hospice facilities.

Hospice is not a place - it's a concept. The focus is on caring, not curing - on life, not death. Quality of life, family wellness, community involvement and personal dignity are all part of hospice palliative care's compassionate and progressive vision.

As health care and social services are restructured, the need for hospice palliative care becomes critical. Hospice palliative care associations cannot meet the current and growing demand. And there are many more families who need hospice palliative care, but are not aware that it is available.

What it means for The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation

The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is committed to the continued evolution of the hospice palliative care movement in Canada . Since 1997, with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, we have helped to facilitate a Canadian network focused on policy change and improvement in hospice palliative care services, support and access to quality end-of-life care. Links, information resources, policy and awareness on a national level have been built.

Our first steps

The initiatives of The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation continue to evolve in partnership with the hospice palliative care movement. We began this innovative partnership by collecting data in the area of hospice palliative care from across Canada . National market research helped us determine which issues were most pressing in hospice palliative care, and we are now working to help define public policy for hospice palliative care.

Living Lessons® initiative

Living Lessons®

With the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation established a program to build awareness on a national level - Living Lessons® was launched in 1998.

Living Lessons® began as a public awareness campaign and has now evolved to consist of a number of resources for caregivers and health-care professionals such as a toll-free number, website and printed publications to provide guidance and practical tips on dealing with the issues associated with end-of-life care.

Hospice palliative care organization requests

Unfortunately, we cannot consider individual hospice palliative care organization's requests for funding. However, we would be interested in learning more about completely unique, innovative projects which will advance hospice palliative care and reflect models which possess the ability to be shared nationally. Please visit Foundation Requests for more information on how to submit a proposal.
