GlaxoSmithKline Celebrates 100th Anniversary with $2 Million Community Investment To Improve Asthma Care
MISSISSAUGA, ON (October 24, 2002) -- GlaxoSmithKline Inc. (GSK) today announced a $2 million investment to improve asthma education and care in Mississauga and Etobicoke in honour of its 100-year anniversary in Canada. The donations to The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre will be directed to the development of innovative, community-based programs in asthma care.
"To mark our 100th anniversary in Canada, we are making a significant investment in asthma care that can make a real difference in the health of patients living here in Mississauga and surrounding communities," said Paul Lucas, President and CEO, GlaxoSmithKline. "As one of Canada's leading corporate charitable donors, we are committed to investing in communities where our employees live and work, and want to continue our legacy of finding the best possible solutions for managing disease."
GSK made the announcement at its corporate headquarters in Mississauga during a 100-year anniversary celebration of the company in Canada. In addition to the community investment, a Canadian maple tree was planted to commemorate the company's 100-year legacy by Colleen Beaumier, MP, Mayor Hazel McCallion, City of Mississauga, Paul Lucas and representatives from both hospitals. GSK in Canada began as The Allen & Hanburys Company Limited, which officially opened its Canadian operations in 1902.
"GlaxoSmithKline has grown from a small company in 1902 to one of the country's leading research-based pharmaceutical companies, and we're proud of our Canadian heritage," says Lucas. "Our partnerships with premiere healthcare facilities like The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre move us forward in our mission to help patients across Canada to do more, feel better and live longer."
GSK is donating $1 million to Credit Valley to provide significantly enhanced support and services for their current asthma education centre. The company's contribution will extend asthma education to schools in Mississauga to better enable children to control and manage this disease.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease resulting in recurrent attacks of breathlessness, generally accompanied by wheezing, chest tightness and/or coughing. In Canada, asthma is the most common reason for emergency room visits, hospitalizations and unscheduled doctors' visits. In Peel region, asthma is the leading cause of hospitalization for children under the age of ten - hospitalizations that can often be prevented with better education and treatment.
"We know that improved patient education reduces admissions to our hospital and emergency room, and that it truly helps our young patients to better manage their asthma," says Dr. Pamela Coates, Chief of Paediatrics, The Credit Valley Hospital. "GSK's contribution provides the vital resources needed to reach many more children and families in our community. It will have a major impact on the quality of life for asthma sufferers."
GSK is also partnering with Trillium Health Centre to further develop the hospital's existing asthma education and disease management programs. The $1 million investment will enable Trillium Health Centre to enhance the hospital's existing asthma education program by developing tools to meet the special needs of children and young adults, and to promote a better understanding of asthma management throughout the community.
In the future, asthma programs at both Trillium and Credit Valley will be housed under the "GlaxoSmithKline Asthma Education Centre."
"An average of nine Canadians die as a result of their asthma each week - a statistic that is both tragic and unnecessary," says Joanne Oake-Vecchiato, Director of Women and Children's Health, Trillium Health Centre. "With effective education and enhanced awareness, most Canadians with asthma should be able to lead active physical lives and the majority of deaths can be prevented. GSK's support of the Trillium Health Centre will bring us one step closer to our ultimate goal, which is to improve asthma care in Ontario."
For the estimated 90,000 Peel residents suffering from asthma - including close to 19,000 children under 12 years of age - education and treatment centres are an invaluable support tool. More than half of asthma sufferers in Peel either experienced asthma symptoms or had an asthma attack in the last 12 months, and more than 75 per cent used medication to control their asthma.
