PEOPLE AND FACILITIES
- GlaxoSmithKline maintains five business offices in Ontario, including the company’s Canadian headquarters and $120 million, state-of-the-art manufacturing and product development facility in Mississauga.
- GlaxoSmithKline has invested approximately $1 million in the MaRS Discovery District in Toronto, a not-for-profit corporation that brings together best-in-class science, business and academic leaders to accelerate the rate of successful commercialization of new discoveries in Canada.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- GlaxoSmithKline invested more than $178 million in Canadian research and development (R&D) in 2007 alone, ranking it among the top 15 contributors to R&D in Canada, across all industries.
- GlaxoSmithKline’s $22 million Pathfinders Fund for Leaders in Canadian Health Science Research was established to help Canada become a world leader in R&D. This initiative encourages health science research and fosters innovation in Canadian medical schools. Investments in Ontario include:
- $1 million endowed Chair in Pediatrics Asthma at the Firestone Institute of Respiratory Health and McMaster University;
- $1 million endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics at the University of Toronto;
- $500,000 contribution to the Dr. J. David Grimes Research Chair at the University of Ottawa; and
- $500,000 to establish an endowed research Chair in Gastroenterology at McMaster University in Hamilton, focusing on inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and its effects on the nervous system.
- GlaxoSmithKline invested $5 million over five years to the Firestone Institute of Respiratory Health (St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton) to provide a better understanding of the physiological and environmental causes of asthma and to develop innovative treatment strategies for patients with the disease.
- GlaxoSmithKline has created a $4 million partnership with the Ottawa Heart Institute in genetics and the underlying pathophysiology of metabolic diseases such as obesity.
- GlaxoSmithKline is contributing $3.75 million to the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), a three-year project led by Dr. Aled Edwards at the University of Toronto. The SGC will contribute to the discovery of new products for unmet medical needs.
- Ontario clinical study sites are participating in GlaxoSmithKline’s national, $3.5 million initiative studying the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease.
- GlaxoSmithKline has entered a multi-year collaboration with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto to study new psychiatric medicines using PET Imaging Technology.
- GlaxoSmithKline is proud to support medical research in Canada through the GSK CIRF-FRIC initiative, a program that aims to support Investigator Initiated research.
CLINICAL RESEARCH
- In 2007, GlaxoSmithKline invested close to $45 million in clinical trials in Canada, conducting more than 80 trials and enrolling well over 2,900 patients. This represents approximately six per cent of the company’s worldwide clinical trial program. The Clinical Development Group typically works on more than 35 different chemical compounds varying from phase I to phase IV trials.
- GSK supported 60 academic research proposals in 2007 with physicians across Canada.
- In 2007, GlaxoSmithKline invested close to $25 million in clinical trials in Ontario.
PHARMACEUTICAL DEVELOPMENT
- In Canada, GlaxoSmithKline has a global R&D pharmaceutical development capability within the company’s state-of-the-art technical manufacturing and product facility in Mississauga.
- The GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceutical Development Division focuses on improving the quality of human life through the development of new drugs for use throughout the world. Through technology and automation, GSK’s Pharmaceutical Development Division specializes in the development of controlled drug delivery, oral liquids and dermatological products.
- GSK’s Canadian Pharmaceutical Development Division has developed and patented novel drug delivery systems, including PROCISETM technology. The PROCISETM technology provides programmable oral drug release based on the therapeutic needs of the patient.
INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS
- In alignment with the MOHLTC chronic disease prevention and management network, GlaxoSmithKline has formed partnerships with Ontario hospitals and primary care teams to help health-care providers and patients better manage asthma, COPD and diabetes according to clinical practice guidelines. In their September 2007 report, the Change Foundation said this innovative approach, called PRIISME®, has had a positive impact on patients, health-care providers and the broader community. There are currently more than 12 PRIISME® projects across Ontario, including: the Ottawa Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Grey Bruce Health Network in Grey and Bruce Counties, St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo, LMC Diabetes in Toronto and Scarborough, Kingston General Hospital, Hotel Dieu Hospital Diabetes in Kingston and Belleville, Northwoods Medical Clinics in Northern Ontario and Fort Erie in the Niagara region.
- GlaxoSmithKline created Community Asthma Care Centres (CACCs) in partnership with Canadian hospitals. Operating in more than 50 centres across the country, CACCs help patients control their asthma, resulting in significant savings to the health-care system.
- There are 14 CACCs across the province in Brantford, Cambridge, Chatham, Hamilton, Markham, Oakville, Orillia, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Scarborough, St. Catharines, Sudbury and Toronto.
COMMUNITY INVESTMENTS
- GlaxoSmithKline is committed to giving back to the communities in which our employees live and work, and annually donates a minimum of one per cent of pre-tax profits through The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation and other channels.
- The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, in conjunction with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and hospice palliative care organizations across the country, launched Living Lessons®. Established in 1998, the national campaign aims to raise awareness of, and support for, hospice palliative care services.
- GlaxoSmithKline is a leading contributor to Health Partners International of Canada (HPIC), a charitable organization that provides free medications, medical supplies and vaccines donated by Canada’s research-based pharmaceutical companies to developing world countries and disaster areas. Since 1994, GlaxoSmithKline has contributed almost $23 million in humanitarian product donations.
