GlaxoSmithKline Initiative to Foster Excellence in Pharmaceutical Research and Education

Research & Development

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in Canada is dedicated to promoting research and development to meet its mandate of helping patients do more, feel better, and live longer. Central to this objective is the potential of collaborations with academic institutions to support cutting-edge drug delivery research and to provide undergraduate and graduate students exposure to the pharmaceutical industry as they navigate through career decisions.

The GlaxoSmithKline initiative to foster excellence in pharmaceutical research and education was launched in February 2004 with the aim of promoting research and education in pharmaceutical sciences and drug delivery at Canada 's nine schools of pharmacy. The Initiative provides various funding initiatives to support students and faculty in their education and innovative research.

The Initiative currently comprises of the following programs:

  • The GSK Graduate Research Seminar in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, an annual honorarium to each of the 9 Canadian schools of pharmacy to be used to invite accomplished scientists in industry or academia to address graduate students
  • The joint GSK/Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences Early Career
    Award
  • The GSK New Investigator Grant for Faculty in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery
  • Co-op student hires throughout the year in the Pharmaceutical Development Department providing training in research and development of drugs to successful students
  • Opportunities for collaboration with, and consultation to, faculty in pharmacy schools from senior technical staff at GSK
  • The GSK Graduate Student Research Fellowship in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery, which will be launched later in 2006
